Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD)

The techniques of MLD are designed to increase the movement of lymph and interstitial fluid, which can significantly reduce swelling and congestion due to sports/auto injuries, recent surgeries, allergies, and swelling related to lymph node removal or an impaired lymphatic system.

The massage-like strokes used are a predominately circular stretching of the skin to include a pressure phase and relaxation phase to move lymph in the desired direction of drainage.  Movements are very rhythmic, relaxing, and are said to have an analgesic effect which can be used to promote pain control.

Manual lymph drainage stimulates your immune system to remove toxins and excess fluid out of your tissues, and is effective in treating a variety of pathologies.

Consider MLD before and after surgery, or if you have fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis, chronic fatigue syndrome, chronic pain, rheumatoid arthritis, scleroderma, chronic sinusitis, tinnitus, migraines, vertigo, venous insufficiency, lipedema or lymphedema.

Prior to receiving MLD, the therapist will usually want a physician’s release, as these techniques are contraindicated with certain conditions such as untreated congestive heart failure, acute DVT, renal dysfunction or in the case of acute infections.

MLD is used for

• Post Traumatic Edema - Sprain, Whiplash, Hematoma
