Lymphedema Therapy

Lymphedema is a chronic disorder that occurs when an interruption of lymphatic flow results in the accumulation of lymphatic fluid and abnormal swelling in the affected area (usually an arm or a leg). When lymphatic vessels are impaired, missing, or when lymph nodes are removed or damaged, the remaining lymph pathways become congested or blocked. These fluids can build up in the connective tissues and the affected area becomes swollen and fibrotic.

Injury, scarring, infection and cancer treatment involving lymph node removal or impairment may cause lymphedema.  Symptoms may begin right away, a few months later, or many years after the occurrence that caused the lymphatic system to become compromised.

Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) is a highly effective treatment for lymphedema and other chronic edemas.  Treatment is to be performed by a certified lymphedema therapist, and generally includes evaluation, skin care, manual lymph drainage, multilayered compression bandaging, therapeutic exercise, compression garments and education in self-care.
